A starship designed to carry Federation influence throughout the Alpha Quadrant and beyond, the NX-91001 is one of the first multi-role starship designs since the Sovereign class was commissioned in the early 2370s. Able to function as a deep-space explorer with extensive sensors and laboratory facilities for scientific research, the NX-91001 also is outfitted as a heavy cruiser armed with some of the latest in Starfleet weapons technology for deployment in hostile areas.
The NX-91001 contains the best of the new technologies developed in the past 40 years. Bioneural circuitry mimics organic neurons, speeding data functions and improving computer performance. An advanced sensor pod can be operated from the bridge or manned directly for intense sweeps, and includes telemetric observation VISOR technology to allow a science officer to interface directly with data transmitted by a robotic exo-probe.
A holoemitter array system allows Emergency Medical and Emergency Command Holograms to operate throughout the ship when needed, and the ship is equipped with a Class 10 warp drive for normal operation and an advanced hyper impulse drive for sublight operation. The Class 10 warp drive is equipped with an advanced quantum sublimating theta-matrix compositor which recrystalizes the ship’s dilithium into a much more stable form than earlier models. This allows the NX-91001 to go much longer distances at high warp velocities before needing to replace the crystals.
Defensive systems of this starship are based on significant advances in Federation technology. The starship features an ablative tetraburnium alloy hull, which allows it to withstand greater amounts of heat and pressure than any previous design, and regenerative shields on the NX-91001 can adapt to enemy weapons fire during a battle. The ship also carries a full suite of offensive weapons, including 16 Type XIV phaser arrays, eight torpedo launchers and several other weapons. Note: Because of the recent conflicts, the complete weapons configuration of the NX-91001 is classified.

With all of the activity coming out of Atari lately, you’d think the once-struggling publisher stumbled across a bag of cash under the house. The company, which recently has made a habit of picking up other publisher’s unwanted cast offs, today acquired City of Heroes developer Cryptic Studios in what GI.biz describes as a "performance-linked deal."
The agreement includes three of Cryptic’s upcoming projects, including next year’s super powered MMO, Champions Online, Star Trek Online in 2010 and an as-yet-unannounced third project (Hint: something Online?) due the year after that. What’s more, the report suggests that in addition to the $26.7 million in cash that Cryptic pocketed from the deal, the developer could see its coffers grow by another $20 million bonus should enough players decide to suit up in tights or explore the final frontier.

Warcry reports that Star Trek Online has been cancelled. Well, not officially cancelled, but the company that used to be called Perpetual and used to have the license to make Star Trek Online had to give back the license. Some other company could now restart developing the game, but they won’t get any existing code from Perpetual.
Scott Jennings calls it an impossible license. But apparently the reasons for Perpetual giving up the license are less about design possibilities, and more about financial possibilities. Perpetual already cancelled Gods & Heroes which was already in the beta and had pre-order boxes shipped to retailers. And they did some clever legal and financial engineering, including creating a new company, P2 Entertainment, and transferring all their assets including the Star Trek Online license to that new entity. People who were owed money by the old Perpetual sued them over that move. Investors had to write off their investments, as the old Perpetual went bankrupt.
For us players all that just means that we won’t see a Star Trek Online game before 2015, if ever.
[Edit: Rumors have it that the new STO developer will be Cryptic Studios.]
[1/18/07 Update]P2 Entertainment To Lay Off Star Trek Online Dev Team Today
In cooperation with P2, Cryptic Studios interviewed members of the Star Trek Online development team at Cryptic’s Los Gatos office Tuesday for positions on unannounced projects. They had no comment on reports that they would take on the game and license.
P2 did not respond to requests for comment on this story.
[Play.tm] is reporting that Cryptic Studios (makers of City of Heros) has a new MMO in the works and will be announced to the public on July 27th. It’s still pure rumor that Cryptic Studios picked up the Star Trek MMO license after Perpetual had to sell it (read above). However, things are looking up for a possible Star Trek MMO.
According to multiple sources around the net it’s official that Cryptic Studios has indeed picked up the Star Trek MMO started by Perpetual entertainment.
