Yahoo best answers…

6 days ago ‘captnesti’ posted a question to [Yahoo Answers] stating:

i have a ps2 and to be honest i want something that is considered a “next-gen” consle. I don’t know what to buy, and i don’t want to spend $700 on it.

Now here there where a lot of replies, ‘NYY 27 IN 08!!!‘ got best answer with this post. Now I happened to miss this, but thought what the hell… my counter points are in RED, I want to show you the gamers how easy it is to snow someone over with buzzwords.

first off i want to let you know that i am a PS360 owner meaning that i own both systems, so i have experienced both systems and you are better off getting a ps3 because…

– ps3 has a built-in blu-ray player

Good if you like Sony movies and extremely slow seek times.

-ps3 supports 1.3 HDMI which has rich colors and xbox supports 1.2 HDMI

HDMI 1.2:
Released August 8, 2005.
Added support for One Bit Audio, used on Super Audio CDs, up to 8 channels.
Availability of HDMI Type A connector for PC sources.
Ability for PC sources to use native sRGB color-space while retaining the option to support the YCbCr color space.
Requirement for HDMI 1.2 and later displays to support low-voltage sources.

HDMI 1.3:
Released June 22, 2006.
Increases single-link bandwidth to 340 MHz (10.2 Gbit/s)
Optionally supports Deep Color with 30-bit, 36-bit, and 48-bit xvYCC, sRGB, or YCbCr compared to 24-bit sRGB or YCbCr in previous HDMI versions.
Incorporates automatic audio syncing (Audio video sync) capability.
Optionally supports output of Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio streams for external decoding by AV receivers.
TrueHD and DTS-HD are lossless audio codec formats used on Blu-ray Discs and HD DVDs.

If the disc player can decode these streams into uncompressed audio, then HDMI 1.3 is not necessary, as all versions of HDMI can transport uncompressed audio.  Cable Categories 1 and 2 defined. Category 1 cable is tested up to 74.25 MHz while Category 2 cable is tested up to 340 MHz.
Availability of a new Type C mini-connector for portable devices.

Pretty much HDMI 1.3 adds more colors then you eye can see, and some audio features that aren’t needed if your player can already decode the audio stream.  So it’s kind of a toss up on if you need HDMI 1.3 VS HDMI 1.2.   It would totally depend on the 1000’s of dollars you have set up in your audio/visual equipment.  [SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA]

– ps3 has much more and better exclusives, most of them cant go to xbox 360 because it cant handle that many data(DVD- 8.5gb, blu-ray 50gb)
Ok.. *blink*   What?  What “more and better” exclusives? a hand full a games perhaps.  But better?  nothing seen so far.  A few trailers.. a lot of promised, but no ‘killer app’ and NOT ONE PS3 game made the top 20 games sold in 2007. (hey, 2008’s data isn’t out yet)

– because of the blu-ray’s huge space, ps3 will have WAY better graphics than 360
For rendered movies perhaps.  However, the PS3 doesn’t have the 360’s throughput on the poly’s either.  You push higher rex textures and you slow the frame rates.  It’s that simple.  Besides.. GRAPHICS DO NOT MAKE THE GAME.

– online is free for ps3 not like 360
But for how long?  Servers and bandwidth cost money.  You’ve got to re-coup the costs somewhere.  Besides, only the GOLD version of Xbox Live costs money.  the Silver version is free.

– you can browse the internet on ps3, no such thing for xbox 360
Well there ARE ways to do it on a 360, but the real question is why would you want to?  You buy a PS3 for two reasons.  A) it’s a cheap Blu-ray player and you’ve got that new 60″ HD-TV and one hell of an audio system, and need something to justify the purchase. B) to play games.
why would you want to sit on your sofa and search the net when you can do it SO much easier and faster with a mouse, keyboard and IE/Firefox?

– the graphics for multi platform games are starting to look better on ps3
Name one.  Seriously, name one game that looks better on the PS3 then it does on the 360. Even BioShock won’t have enhanced graphics for the new PS3 version.  Though yeah, they will look better then what’s on the Wii.

– developers stated that they will start using ps3 as the lead platform and port ps3 games to xbox
Yeah, when the PS3 first game out.  Now developers are finding the Xbox SO much easier to program for.  Therefore you have two problems with the PS3 from a developers/publishers point of view.  Do you create a game on a platform that’s easier to program for.  Therefor giving you a faster turn around time, and for huge user base?  or develop a game for a small user base, that costs more money to develop for because of the hardware?
just from a straight business point of view you develop for the system that’ll give you the most profit.  Right now, that’s the 360.  Or the Wii for you casual game developers.

– playstation home is coming out this fall, its a virtual community where you can hang out with friends and customize your own apartment which xbox doesnt have(FREE)

Fall.. so that’s the newest due date?  and how long as home been in development?  better yet, how many times has it been pushed back?  and for what?  an over glorified MySpace.  I’m not 12.  I don’t need a ‘virtual community’  if I want that I’ve got WoW or EQ2 to play in.  Home.. really.. who cares?

– ps3 is a true HD console. xbox 360 upscale games to 1080p and ps3 DISPLAY games up to 1080p
Not True.  the 360 DOES have native 1080p, and at least 3 games support it.    Though yes, the PS3 has more supported titles.  Point is the 360 can have native 1080p support.  [SOURCE: MakeYouGoHmm.com]

– built in Wi-Fi
Point.  You need an extra piece of equipment to make the 360 wireless.  But then again, for me at least, it’s a moot point.  I like my equipment wired.  Less energy floating though the air, and all and all tends to be a bit faster and easier to set up.

– xbox 360: 33% hardware failure  ps3: .2% hardware failure(see the decimal? less than 1%!)
Again, point.. But that’s also if you’ve bought the older version of the system.. new system boxes don’t have that RRoD problem and Sony doesn’t give any one model long enough on the market to even see if it will fail.  Even the 80 gig is due to be replaced by a 120 gig model.

– ps3 plays almost all ps1/ps2 games except the 40gb, xbox 360 can only play certain titles mostly the “greatest hits”

Except for those games that need the rumble pack or have extra controllers (like Guitar Hero), and the NEW 80 gig model will have the BC removed completely, and the list for 360 BC list [is rather large].

– dualshock 3 is now available
Finally. its only like 3 years later.

– xbox 360 already has been maxed out to its potential with gears of war. ps3 has not been maxed out yet- look at uncharted drakes fortune, better graphics than gears and its only 30% of ps3’s potential
O.o  and where do you get those numbers?  I wouldn’t say uncharted looks bad by any means, but better then Gears?  I wouldn’t do that far.  There’s a lot more ‘going on’ on the screen in gears at any one time then I’ve seen in uncharted.

– you can upgrade your harddrive without voiding warranties with any 2.5 HDD, which xbox cant because you have to buy a xbox HDD
(they actually have the step by step on how to upgrade it on playstation.com)
Now there you have a point.  No you can’t upgrade the HD.   However, you’re missing one little detail.  the 20 gig drive for the Xbox is plenty of room if you keep up with deleting the old crap off it.  With the PS3 you NEED the bigger space, because you need to INSTALL your games before you can play them.. Why?  because of the all mighty Blu-ray seek times are so freaking slow that the game needs to put parts of itself on the hard drive.

those are the ones that i know right off my mind but there are much more reason than this
You forgot to add: ‘Because I’m really a fanboy’ (sorry, you all know I’ve been wanting to say it.. LOL)

Now I want you to do me a favor, list all the reasons why xbox is better than ps3. I PROMISE you that nobody will get at least 5 reasons
Why should I?  Didn’t I just blow out 90% of your argument on why the PS3 is better then the Xbox?

if you get ps3, look at this, you will be able to play metal gear solid 4, haze, killzone 2, resistance 2(60 player online!!!!), final fantasy XIII, motorstorm 2, little big planet, better version of GTA IV, god of war 3, uncharted drake’s fortune, uncharted 2, heavenly sword, ratchet and clank, SOCOM: confrontation, gran turismo 5, ETC- http://news.filefront.com/ps3-exclusives…

Metal Gear Solid 4:  Which you need to pay for some online options, and besides having one hell of a release, there’s not much noise on the net about it.  I find that interesting.
Haze:  One word.. SUCK and there’s a NUMBER of articles out there to back me up on that one.
Killzone 2: Didn’t I already play this game?  Oh yeah, it’s called Team Fortress.
Resistance 2:  Could be interesting, but a killer app?
Final fantasy XIII: No longer exclusive.
Motorstorm 2:  LIke the first one was really that much to write home about.
Little big planet: Right now it’s pure hype, and not much ‘news’ about it.  Looks good though.
GTA IV:  better version: Most of the side by side movies have proven the 360 looks a little better.
God of war 3: No where near complete yet.
Uncharted: Drake’s fortune: Good game, so there’s one out of the list.
Uncharted 2: Well duh.  Naughty Dog eats out of Sony’s hand.
Heavenly Sword: Oh that forgettable,We spent a whole processor to make her hair move like crap.’ Game?
Ratchet and Clank: another Good one.
SOCOM: confrontation: hopefully better then the first…
Gran turismo 5: not due until like 2010.

Prices as of today:
ps3- 80gb: $499 with metal gear solid 4
        40gb: $399 with spiderman 3 blu-ray
xbox 360(premium)- $349
(elite)- $449
if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with, that would add up to over 700 dollars, so that means ps3 is cheaper
like what.. Wireless?  just plug it in.  So the Xbox is cheaper.

xbox 360 pricing to match ps3’s features:
$349/$449- console
$50- XBL subscription(only for 1 YEAR) pay $50 every year (Only if you want to play with your friends online, and I’ve seen it as cheap as $39)
$100- wi-fi adaptor (Don’t need it if you just plug it in)
$200- HD-DVD drive add-on (why?  HD-DVD is dead, and you can find it on E-bay for like $20)
$20- rechargeable battery kit (or a $10 store bought one)
all comes out to $720/$820- add $50 each year you subscribe for XBL

ps3 features:
$399/$499- console
spiderman 3 blu-ray movie/MGS4
online- free
rechargeable battery- built in the controller
wi-fi built in
blu-ray player(better than HD-DVD) built in
all comes out to $399/$499, oh my,look at that, its the same price as before

Talk about some skewed numbers..

Now to REALLY answer the question.  Look at the games you want to play.  Both online and offline and then see how many of those games are on what console.  If more are on the PS3, then buy a PS3.   If more on the Xbox, then buy a 360 and don’t forget about the Wii.

THAT’S how GAMERS pick a console.  They look at the games.  Not the hardware.

  1. Pretty much HDMI 1.3 adds more colors then you eye can see, and some audio features that aren’t needed if your player can already decode the audio stream. 1) Never use Wiki as a source.
    2) Xbox HDMI is much less likely to be upgraded, while PS3 firmware is constantly improving. Because of the hardware’s capacity for upgrade, it’s a lot more likely PS3 will continue to overstep the limitations of the other consoles for the next eight years of its lifespan and make the gap wider through updates.

“A lot of promised, but no ‘killer app’ and NOT ONE PS3 game made the top 20 games sold in 2007. (hey, 2008’s data isn’t out yet)”

True, but how many PS2 games were on that Top 20 sales? How many Xbox games? And how many Xbox 360 exclusives?
One Xbox 360 exlusive. Halo 3. That’s it.

However, the PS3 doesn’t have the 360’s throughput on the poly’s either. You push higher rex textures and you slow the frame rates. It’s that simple. Besides.. GRAPHICS DO NOT MAKE THE GAME.

No. But it was one of the points put across.
And the PS3 doesn’t work like the 360. Textures can be done low res and then procedurally rendered, unlike the 360, allowing you to have crisp, extremely realistic, real-time-rendered textures without having to sacrifice poly count. The 260 can’t do that, since they don’t have multiple cores.

    “The Silver version is free.”
The Silver version is a joke. Who uses the 360 as an instant messenger? And to download demos? You have your console connected to the internet because you want to.
PSN may cost money in the future. But people have been naysaying the same about Google, and I still don’t see any prices coming up on my Gmail.
I’ll enjoy my free PSN for now. You keep paying your monthly fees, and come laugh to me in a few years when I start paying monthly fees though you’re already three hundred dollars in.

“why would you want to sit on your sofa and search the net when you can do it SO much easier and faster with a mouse, keyboard and IE/Firefox?”

Because you CAN plug a mouse and keyboard in. I’ve done it.
Not only that, but you can install Linux onto it if you want and stream World of Warcraft onto your hi-def TV from your laptop.

“Name one. Seriously, name one game that looks better on the PS3 then it does on the 360. Even BioShock won’t have enhanced graphics for the new PS3 version.”

    Assassin’s Creed in 1080p. Which the 360 doesn’t support.

“Yeah, when the PS3 first game out. Now developers are finding the Xbox SO much easier to program for.”

Actually, listening to E3 conferences, it sounds like a lot of people including Bethesda are really excited about the PS3 and its completely untapped potential. Yeah, 360’s easier to program, but it’s also easier to make a board game than it is World of Warcraft. Are you still going to pick a board game over making an MMO?

“I’m not 12. I don’t need a ‘virtual community’ if I want that I’ve got WoW or EQ2 to play in. Home.. really.. who cares?”

Apparently Microsoft thinks it’s a good idea. That’s why they’re releasing Avatars, which does exactly the same thing, using Mii-like people.

“Point is the 360 can have native 1080p support.”

Good point. They should use it.

“I like my equipment wired. Less energy floating though the air, and all and all tends to be a bit faster and easier to set up.”

Actually, I like that I can carry my PS3, a couple of games, cables and a controller in one hand because I have so little equipment to deal with. Having an extra wired cable to carry around so I can set it up actually isn’t all that convenient. Turning wireless on tends to take me maybe one minute or less.

“New system boxes don’t have that RRoD problem and Sony doesn’t give any one model long enough on the market to even see if it will fail. Even the 80 gig is due to be replaced by a 120 gig model.”

The RROD issue was evident within weeks of the Xbos 360’s release.
Also, aren’t people still having to send in their old RROD consoles to Microsoft because the cheapskates won’t replace their consoles with new, repaired ones? While Sony’s replacing every damaged or bricked PS3 with one that won’t brick.

“The NEW 80 gig model will have the BC removed completely, and the list for 360 BC list [is rather large].”

Because the new 80 gig models are just 40 gig models with more space. Sony never stated otherwise.

“Finally. its only like 3 years later.”
Yeah. When did Microsoft promise Live Anywhere? Three years ago?

“There’s a lot more ‘going on’ on the screen in gears at any one time then I’ve seen in uncharted.”
Not going to argue there, I don’t know about the numbers. But I know Heavy Rain will top Gears by far, and that has to be a PS3 excusive, David Cage said.

“The 20 gig drive for the Xbox is plenty of room if you keep up with deleting the old crap off it. With the PS3 you NEED the bigger space, because you need to INSTALL your games before you can play them.. Why? because of the all mighty Blu-ray seek times are so freaking slow that the game needs to put parts of itself on the hard drive.”

Actually, I keep running out of space because I keep downloading games and DLC. Game installations have only taken up less than 15 gigs of my hard drive
Plus, look at games like Uncharted with no loading times whatsoever. The install isn’t necessary, it’s just a developer quick fix. With time they’ll learn to get around it.

Metal Gear Solid 4: Which you need to pay for some online options, and besides having one hell of a release, there’s not much noise on the net about it. I find that interesting.

Don’t need to pay to play the basic game online. I haven’t paid a cent yet and I’m still enjoying it.
There’s not that much noise because we’re still playing it.

Haze: No arguments there. Bad game.

Killzone 2: Looks a lot cooler than TF to me. Maybe you should wait till it comes out before you trash it.

Resistance 2: Could be interesting, but a killer app? Agreed.

Final fantasy XIII: Yeah. We know. Square thanks you for the money.

Motorstorm 2: Not excited. You’re right there.

Little big planet: Five thousand and one videos count as news. Just admit it that this game looks awesome and cute enough that nobody will turn it down.

GTA IV: It’s not an exclusive, so eh.

God of war 3: No where near complete yet. But it will come out. And not on 360.

Uncharted: Drake’s fortune: Good game, so there’s one out of the list.

Uncharted 2: Well duh. Naughty Dog eats out of Sony’s hand.
So does all of Insomniac. Because they really, really love the PS3. With good reason.

Heavenly Sword: One of the most moving and engaging stories I have ever played, with beautiful environments, astounding voice acting (do not try to tell me Master Chief has anywhere near as commanding presence as Nariko) and a truly fun, interesting combat system.
One point: way, way, WAY too short.

Ratchet and Clank: another Good one.
    How many is that now?

SOCOM: confrontation: hopefully better then the first.
You mean, SOCOM which got an 8.3, SOCOM II which got an 8.8, or SOCOM 3 which got a 9.0? Sounds like they only keep getting BETTER.

Gran turismo 5: not due until like 2010.
Still coming out. Please give me a list of 360 games I really really want, and then tell me when those games are coming out.

“if you want the accessories that ps3 comes with”
Wait, what accessories? A composite cable, that’s like 30 bucks? Another controller, which the 360 doesn’t have either? A USB cable that’s lying around at home? Or the hi-def TV, that you need for the 360’s HD as well?
Please, illuminate me–what accessories are going to jack my price up so badly?

$50- XBL subscription(only for 1 YEAR) pay $50 every year (Only if you want to play with your friends online, and I’ve seen it as cheap as $39)
    Sony PSN- Free

$100- wi-fi adaptor (Don’t need it if you just plug it in)
    Sony Wifi- Free

$200- HD-DVD drive add-on (why? HD-DVD is dead, and you can find it on E-bay for like $20)
    Sony Blu-Ray- Free

$20- rechargeable battery kit (or a $10 store bought one)
    Sony Sixaxis/DS3 rechargeable battery- FREE
Comes with the controller, and you plug it into any USB drive anywhere–on your PC, on the PS3, on your stupid Mac Powerbook if you want.

And if you have a Bluetooth headset that came with your Razr, you can use it on the PS3, while you need to buy Microsoft’s own personal brand of Headcrap to talk back at idiots on Xbox Live.

You want me to look at games? Okay, let’s look at the 360 exclusive games of the future.

    MASS EFFECT
    MASS EFFECT 2
    GEARS OF WAR
    GEARS OF WAR 2
    HALO 3

Wait, wait… no, we need to change that list

    MASS EFFECT 2
    GEARS OF WAR 2
    HALO 3

Because Microsoft ports everything to PC. There’s no point in owning a 360 if you already have a good PC. I don’t, so maybe I SHOULD buy a 360–but oh, wait, that’s only like five games people really want–one of which is very likely to come out on PS3.

There’s also Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden II.
Fable 2 is made by Peter Molyneaux. So you know it’s not going to be anything like he’s saying.
Ninja Gaiden II was just not as good as Sigma. And, oh, that’s right, Sigma is a PS3 exclusive.
    Fancy that.
