BioShock on the PS3…

[ScrawlFX] has posted a little poll asking a very simple question:  “If BioShock came to the PS3 would you buy it?”

Now I must answer that question with a question.  “Why should I bother?”
here’s my thoughts.

1) BioShock for the PS3 would just be a port.  Ports aren’t normally as good as the original.

2) Most of gamers what that where going to play BioShock already have.  So you really aren’t going to get anything ‘new’ from the game.  We already know the story line, so the ending isn’t going to change. Even if the adventure changes a little getting to the ending(s).

3) Is there enough of a PS3 user base to make port of an already released game worth it to produce?

4) Bioshock, where as being a good game, is no longer a killer app.  It’s not going to push hardware sales of the PS3.

5) BioShock is/was a Xbox360 exclusive and if Microsoft was smart it paid for the sequel too.

From a business point of view, sorry PS3 fans, I really don’t think BioShock is coming to the PS3.  There might be some money to be made there, but I really don’t think it’ll be enough (at least in the American market) to warrant a port.    You’re better of waiting for the the sequel if M$ hasn’t paid for it yet.

[05/22/08 - Update #1]
Looks like [some sites] are picking up a [Game Reactor] post stating that they will have information on BioShock coming to the PS3.    Now when I went to the site the post about the PS3 BioShock had been removed from the site.  Not seeing anything as to why.  Perhaps it was just posted to get some more hits?

[05/22/08 - Update #2]
Well, now [1UP] has a post now saying that the July Issue of EGM has a spread about BioShock coming to the PS3 with possible graphic improvements and coming just in time for the this years holiday season.

I still don’t believe it’s worth it.. but I’ll wait and see what EGM has to say about it.

[05/28/08 - Update #3]

[strategy informer] is reporting that the PS3 version of BioShock will not include any visual updates, just all the standard updates (Patches and the new plasmids)

The creative director for Bioshock is quoted to have said:

“whatever we end up with via our discussions with Sony, coupled with the fact that BioShock allows you to go through and roll your own shooter in the first place…these two factors together would turn into a motive for replay.”

I still do not understand all of this, why spend the money to port a the game to a system that has the smallest user base?  Again, it’s not like BioShock is going to push any hardware, and it’s already 9 months old, and there hasn’t been anything ‘new’ with the game in months.  No more patches or new plasmids, levels, mobs or anything.  Let alone cleaning up the laughable animation when you meet Ryan.  So there really is no reply value.  The only real ‘choice’ you have is if you are going to kill the daughters or not.   With how heavily the story is coupled with the game there really is NO reply value.

So there’s an open question to anyone working on the BioShock PS3 port.. Why bother?

[05/29/08 - Update #4]

Now [PC World] has quoted Christoph Hartmann (President of 2k Games) as saying:

“Since BioShock for Xbox 360 and Games for Windows won countless 2007 Game of the Year awards, we are excited to see the impact of this stellar title for the PlayStation 3 when it debuts this fall,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K.

“Over the coming months we look forward to revealing the new features and content that will make this a must-have game for its new audience, as well as for those who enjoyed it on the other platforms.”

Yeah.. we look forward to hearing about these new features and content…

New Guitar Hero Guinness World Record…

Yep, in case you didn’t know Guinness World records has a video game catagory, and Daniel Johnson has beat the old record by more then 10,000 points while playing ‘Through the Fire and Flame’ by DragonForce on Expert, according to [DevelopMag].

So now if you out to try to beat the world record, you’ll need to nail more then 890, 971 on the song.. Good luck, with that.  I’m still lucky to get 5% into the song on Expert, my old man hands just aren’t as fast as they used to be.

Microsoft to clean up Xbox LIVE arcade.

According to [EuroGamer], and Xbox LIVE general manger Marc Whitten, Microsoft will be removing under performing (read: Crap) titles from Xbox LIVE.   I wonder why they let the crap on in the first place.  I stated a long time ago that I didn’t pay like $400 for a 360 just to play Pac-Man.

Anyway, Marc stats:

“We will be delisting older underperforming titles in order to keep the service focused on a section of high quality games,” Whitten told [Next-gen.biz].

“The way it will work is that the title will need to be at least 6 months old and have a Metacritic score below 65 and a conversion rate below 6 percent on the service.”

“We will also give a three-month notice before delisting any title.”

the ‘conversion rate’ mentioned above is the ratio between the people that have downloaded the game VS those that bought it.  But hey, at least you’ve got 3 months before the game get’s wasted and you don’t ‘lose’ it, as long as you’ve got the game downloaded and you don’t need to replace the HD, because you won’t be able to download it again.

Capcom to get into the movie biz…

According to [Bloomberg Japan] Capcom is in talks with Hollywood in order to try to make some of the cash that Marvel is/was seeing from it’s string of movie hits (like Spider man and Xmen).    By making movies from titles like ‘Resident Evil’, ‘Devil May Cry’, and ‘Street Fighter’…

So who at Capcom is blind, and totally forgot that there’s already BEEN 3 Resident Evil movies, and at least 2 Street Fighter movies..  most of the movies pretty much bombed or where just ‘oh-hum’, and when (if ever) was the last time a GOOD movie was created based off a video game franchise? One that kept the feel, and the idea of the game in check, and not went off of some stupid idea the director got.. like Super Mario Brothers.. WTF was that?!

Just because the lead designer(s) are involved doesn’t mean the movie will be any good.. just look at Mortal Kombat (which I own..but only because of the goddess that is Talisa Soto (that’s Kitana.. Princess Kitana to you) )

Just look at the Doom movie.  Really.. now HOW freaking hard must it have been to create a movie about demons rising from hell to take over a military base?!

Jack Thompson.. Pwn’d

I’m lazy this morning so no re-write. =)

http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/qj/qjnet/~3/294820971/120355

Florida lawyer Jack Thompson certainly had it coming: the anti-gaming activist got served, being found guilty of 27 out of 31 charges against him. For those who haven’t been following the anti-gaming circus and the ensuing court proceedings against Thompson’s behavior, the lawyer earned the ire of many colleagues and gamers by pulling outrageous stunts to make his stand against video games known.

The presiding judge, Judge Dava Tunis, ruled Jack Thompson as guilty for several charges, which include:

  • Knowingly making a false statement of material fact or law to a tribunal
  • Knowingly disobeying an obligation under the rules of a tribunal
  • Communicating the merits of the case with a judge before whom the proceeding is pending
  • Using means that have no purpose other than to embarrass, delay or burden a third person
  • Engaging in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit or misrepresentation
  • Engaging in conduct in connection with the practice of law that is prejudicial to the administration of justice, including to knowingly or through callous indifference disparage or humiliate litigants or other lawyers
  • Making statements that the lawyer knows to be false or with reckless disregard as to the truth or falsity concerning the qualifications or integrity of a judge

That’s not the end of Thompson’s woes, however, with a hearing about possible sanctions for Thompson scheduled on June 4, and Judge Tunis’ full report to the Florida Supreme Court due on September 2.
