Masthead Reveals Post-Apocalyptic MMO ‘Earthrise’

Posted by pogowolf on January 23, 2008

After World War 3 the Earth lies in ruins, with all but a small pocket of humanity completely wiped off the face of the planet. A clone-based Utopian society arises, but the strict controls required to maintain such a utopia have begun to garner harsh opposition. This is the world of Earthrise, a post-apocalyptic MMO just announced by Bulgarian developer Masthead Studios.

“This will change the way we play sci-fi MMOs,” said Atanas Atanasov, CEO of Masthead Studios. “Our team is creating a game that will introduce the next innovative approach to the genre, and we feel to MMOs themselves. We based the game in a vision of society’s future, where the technology and economics of today have ensured an unavoidable cataclysm. Earthrise won’t be just an MMO, but an experience in a new, never-before-imagined post-apocalyptic world.”

Players will choose to side with the new world order or toss their hat in with the shadow government seeking freedom from the oppressive regime. It reminds me a bit of the battle between Omni-Tek and the Clans in Funcom’s Anarchy Online, but in a genre struggling to find quality science fiction fare I am willing to forgive Masthead the odd lapse in originality if they are willing to deliver a quality high-tech MMO experience.

PVP sounds particularly interesting, with customizable power armor and mechanized exoskeletons prominently featured – two sci-fi elements guaranteed to get my attention. Add in the intriguing possibilities involved with the potential to episodically reveal what the rest of the world looks like post World War III and you’ve got quite an intriguing little package.

Masthead plans to have Earthrise ready for release in 2009. For more information and pretty pictures, check out the game’s official site at Play-Earthrise.com.

Masthead Studios Unveils the Post-Apocalyptic World

Independent developers to release their debut title Earthrise

January 23, 2008 – Sofia, Bulgaria – Masthead Studios, the innovative independent game development studio based in Bulgaria, is proud to announce its debut MMO Earthrise, a post-apocalyptic science fiction title slated to release in 2009.

In the aftermath of a catastrophic third world war, Earth lies in ruin, and mankind is all but extinct. In a small corner of the world a new society has risen in the years following, populated mostly by the clones of those stored in a massive DNA database compiled at the end of the war. A corporate government has created a seemingly Utopian civilization, but its heavy-handed control over society, its resources, and even life itself has forced a substantial opposition. These rival factions accuse the government of crimes against humanity in its rampant willingness to abuse the cloning process to its own gain. It is at this crossroads that players will find themselves: fight as a champion of the new world order, or take up arms with Noir, the shadow government sworn to overthrow the totalitarian rule.

Masthead has employed its own engine to craft the stunning graphics and atmosphere in the game, as well as to handle its dynamic combat mechanics. Explore the diverse and sprawling capital city of Sal Vitas and surrounding unclaimed territories. Fight with advanced PvP mechanics featuring customizable power armor, huge mechanized exoskeletons, and an arsenal of weapons to control contested lands and their resources. Influence the market-based economy by working for the corporate world or trading on the black market, all based in immense and highly customized crafting and offline play systems. Players will shape the society in the beginning of a new mankind; or they will create their own dystopia.

Posted by pogowolf on January 23, 2008

Funcom has introduced a unique “tiered subscription fee” system into their science fiction MMORPG Anarchy Online. The game is about to get a brand new graphics engine to update it for modern machines. The system allows players to play free-to-play, for $5 a month or a regular $14.95. The more people pay, the more content they have access to.

Durham, USA – January 23, 2008 – Funcom announces the introduction of a tiered subscription system in Anarchy Online, and players can now choose between three subscriptions plans going from free-to-play to 5 to 14,95 USD / EUR a month. The newest subscription level means that gamers can access the areas and content in the Shadowlands expansion pack for only 5 USD / EUR a month, thereby offering one of the most profound, engaging and deep online experiences around for a low monthly cost.

The new areas which open up for the 5 USD a month subscribers are all located in the Shadowlands. This expansion pack got an incredible review score average, several awards and great critical acclaim when it launched, and is one of the most heralded MMO expansions of all time. The expansion not only gives players massive new areas to explore, it also introduces lots of new features as well as a chance to reach the maximum level in Anarchy Online.

“A lot of our free players have really wanted to explore more of Anarchy Online, without committing to a premium subscription. We therefore hope that many will take advantage of the option we are now giving them,” said Craig Morrison, Producer and Game Director on Anarchy Online. “With a great range of subscription choices, a brand new graphics engine and a constant update of fresh content we aim to deliver a great MMO experience for many years to come.”

The new subscription tier comes on top of the existing business models in Anarchy Online, and avid MMO gamers can still play the classic version of Anarchy Online entirely for free. In addition, Funcom continue to focus on premium subscribers, who get access to absolutely all which Anarchy Online has to offer for 14.95 a month.

Anarchy Online was the first of the major western MMO’s to go for a free-to-play business model in 2004, and through the years Funcom has introduced numerous progressive models. Ranging from being the first game with dynamic in-game advertisement to being a pioneer in introducing digital downloads, free-to-play models, free trials, paid virtual items and more, Funcom keeps on exploring new approaches to running a MMO. The introduction of a tiered subscription system is meant to further extend the success of Anarchy Online, while giving Funcom customers even more choices in how they want to access the game.

Anarchy Online have to date entertained more than 1.3 million gamers, and continues to attract new players in the hundreds of thousands. As Anarchy Online goes into its seventh year of operation Funcom also looks ahead, and a great new graphics engine will be launched later this year. Funcom is therefore proud to reveal the first video from the new engine, showing what the Anarchy Online players can expect in the years to come. The impressive new video can be found at www.anarchy-online.com.

Gamers Strike Back Against Mass Effect Critic on Amazon

Posted by pogowolf on January 23, 2008

After hearing the offensive and biased attack against Mass Effect on Fox News by Cooper Lawrence, the psychologist who took part in the biased strike on the game, her book on Amazon.com titled ‘The Cult of Perfection: Making Peace with Your Inner Overachiever’ is full of one-star reviews, mostly coming from gamers.Ms. Lawrence may think that it’s ok to bash a product she has never used, so gamers are now bashing a book they have never read to drop her book rating on Amazon. Currently, there over 40 negative reviews posted. Check out the Amazon link via Gaming Today if you’d like to throw your two cents in or to just read some of the funny comments against her.

[Update on this Story:  Looks like Amazon is deleteing 1 star reviews of the book almost as soon as the review is posted.    So what if I really didn't like the book, couldn't I still give it a 1 star?]

Posted by pogowolf on January 23, 2008

CCP GamesEVE Online, a space-themed massively multiplayer online world, has become the first MMOG to distribute through Steam, a digital distribution platform for games. “We are immensely excited and honored that EVE Online will be the first MMO on Steam,”  Magnus Bergsson, VP of Sales at CCP, said in a statement. “Steam has been the leading online distribution platform for a long time and home to some of the most dedicated gamers around, so we couldn’t think of a better fit for EVE Online.” EVE drew attention over the summer for appointing an official in-world economist, and it followed up on plans to use the world for research by co-launching a 2.5-year program in January. Steam users will receive a free 21-day trial of EVE and $5 off their first full month.

Hellgate: London v1.0 patch notes.

Posted by pogowolf on January 23, 2008

You there in the back; stop that snickering! Here are the Stonehendge patch (version 1.0) notes in case you were curious. Grats on losing the beta tag (oh, just kidding). The update should be out this week.

In other HGL news, Flagship has announced that Jan. 31st is the deadline to become a founder’s club member for Hellgate London should you want to be a premium member for life without paying a monthly fee.

In an effort to provide Hellgaters who would like to subscribe to Hellgate: London but can’t use our current payment methods, subscribing via PayPal and PayByCash is now possible. While this was mentioned in our recent press release about the launch of Stonehenge, we wanted to also mention that the Founder’s Offer will be coming to an end on January 31st.This is to allow those who couldn’t use our original payment options a window of time to select it. The Founder’s Offer is a one-time payment which grants a lifetime subscription to Hellgate: London and is made available to those players who pre-ordered the game.

Our upcoming content update, the Stonehenge Chronicles, features new environments, monsters, and items exclusively for Hellgate: London subscribers.

Thanks Blue’s News.
